IBW Surveyors was engaged to support the structural assessment of an existing gabion wall along Taylor Massey Creek in Toronto, creating a detailed digital representation to assist engineers in evaluating the structure’s condition and identifying potential deficiencies. This project presented significant access challenges, as steep terrain, winter weather conditions, and the restricted creek-side environment made traditional inspection methods both difficult and hazardous for field personnel. The client required a safe and efficient method to capture comprehensive data suitable for detailed engineering review without exposing survey crews or engineers to unnecessary risk along the challenging slope and waterway corridor. By combining advanced terrestrial scanning technology with field procedures specifically tailored to the site’s constraints, IBW captured comprehensive spatial data of the wall structure and delivered a highly detailed 3D dataset that supported the client’s engineering assessment while significantly reducing field exposure time in the restricted environment.
Technical Details
Georeferenced Point Cloud Registration Across Restricted Creek Corridor
The technical execution of this project required capturing approximately 300 metres of gabion wall using terrestrial LiDAR scanning while working within the constraints of a steep, restricted creek-side environment. IBW established survey control and Ground Control Points (GCPs) throughout the corridor to ensure accurate georeferencing and registration of all scan data across the full length of the structure. Multiple scan setups were strategically positioned to achieve continuous coverage of the wall face and surrounding terrain, with each setup carefully planned to work within the site’s access limitations and winter conditions. The resulting scan data underwent rigorous processing, registration, and quality-checking procedures to produce a single unified 3D point cloud spanning the entire assessed corridor. This meticulous approach to data collection and processing ensured that the final georeferenced dataset provided engineers with complete, reliable coverage suitable for detailed condition assessment, measurement extraction, and deficiency identification without requiring repeat site visits.

IBW deployed terrestrial LiDAR scanning technology integrated with professional survey control methods to capture the gabion wall with the high level of detail and precision required for engineering assessment. The scanning operations utilized Trimble SX10 and SX12 scanning total stations, collecting millions of spatial data points to create a realistic and comprehensive digital representation of the structure and surrounding environment. This scan-based approach was particularly well-suited to the challenging site conditions, allowing survey crews to capture complete structural data from safe, stable positions rather than requiring direct physical access to unstable or hazardous sections of the wall. All collected scan data was processed and registered using Trimble Business Centre, resulting in a fully georeferenced 3D dataset optimized for visualization, precise measurement extraction, and detailed engineering analysis. This technology-driven approach delivered the comprehensive structural documentation needed for maintenance and rehabilitation planning while prioritizing crew safety throughout the challenging creek-side assessment.
