Project Summary
Pre-Engineering Survey for Sewer Discharge Infrastructure
Markham, ON
Municipal sewer discharge projects require comprehensive topographic and bathymetric data to support effective pre-engineering design, particularly when site conditions present access and scheduling challenges. The Glynnwood Tributary Area Sewer Discharge project in Markham demanded IBW Surveyors deliver detailed survey data on an aggressive timeline while working in difficult near-water and bush terrain. This medium-sized project required IBW to deploy advanced mobile mapping technology and unmanned survey vessels to efficiently capture both terrestrial topography and in-water bathymetric data, ensuring the engineering team had complete, accurate information for discharge infrastructure design despite challenging site conditions and tight scheduling requirements.
Technical Details
Mobile Mapping Integration with USV Bathymetric Data Collection
The technical execution of this project focused on efficiency and data completeness despite difficult field conditions. IBW deployed a strategic technology suite tailored to the project’s unique challenges, utilizing the NavVis mobile mapping system for its ability to rapidly and comprehensively capture dense 3D point cloud data for terrestrial topography. This approach proved essential for meeting the project’s aggressive schedule while working in challenging bush areas where traditional surveying would have been time-consuming. For the in-water component, IBW deployed an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) equipped with sonar systems for safe and detailed bathymetric data collection. This remote-operated technology allowed the team to meet scheduling requirements and minimize field time in challenging near-water areas, while seamlessly integrating the bathymetric data with the terrestrial scan data to create one complete, unified model for the engineering design team.
Equipment & Technology
NavVis Mobile Mapping with Integrated USV Sonar Platform
IBW utilized a comprehensive survey technology platform combining cutting-edge mobile mapping with specialized marine surveying equipment. The primary terrestrial data collection employed the NavVis MLX mobile mapping system for rapid, high-density 3D point cloud capture, supported by Trimble Robotic Total Stations and Trimble GNSS Systems for precise control and supplementary measurements. The bathymetric survey utilized a Kingfisher USV equipped with a BL700 Single Beam Echo Sounder for detailed underwater mapping. All collected data underwent processing through AutoCAD Civil 3D for design integration, Microsurvey CAD for specialized survey calculations, Trimble Business Centre for comprehensive data management, and Topodot for efficient point cloud processing. This integrated approach ensured seamless combination of terrestrial and bathymetric datasets into a complete unified model meeting pre-engineering design requirements.
